Good
but the book does make it significantly less painful than other math books I've had

As a rental from Amazon, it came with the suggestion of keeping the box. Physically impossible to use the box to ship it back, as it was one of those boxes with a ripcord.. Not reusable. The book is exactly what I need. It's a math book, so I'm not much a fan, but the book does make it significantly less painful than other math books I've had.
I have a degree in Computer Info Systems and I wanted to go back and get my Masters in Comp Sci..sooooo.. here I am. Is it the teacher, or the book, or both? The teacher has assigned problems from the book in advance. You go home and you have the problem, and the answers for the odd numbers in the back, and no idea how to do 85% of the assigned problems because there is no example anywhere to be found. I'm not sure how learning is supposed to occur during this process? The sections in this book before the problems do a few basic examples, then they have dozens of problems far FAR more advance and cryptic. Which leave the student baffled as to how they got the answer. No learning. I've had college algebra before, but this is by far the most difficult book I've ever seen on the subject. It would take me about a month working every night to cover 1 chapter, and we cover 1 chapter a week in the class. I am reading a Calculus book that is far easier to understand than this. This book should be renamed to: Algebra for the expert mathematician professional. The pages rip very easily also.
I am taking college algebra now, and we're using this book. The problem I think most people are finding is that this book was written for traditional college students who had algebra 1&2 in high school and basically have no other time constraints, ie., a family, job etc. If you've been out of school for 10+ years it's going to be a struggle because the author assumes that he is just adding a little bit more knowledge to what you already know and have been doing for the last 2-3 years. If you are a non-traditional student I suggest that you also buy the solution manual and the DVD for this book, and then block off the adequate time required for you to succeed, otherwise forget it. Now specifics about this book. It skips too many steps in the examples, therefore students can't go back to the particular section and see how a problem is solved. Also the even numbered problems often don't have their similar match amongst the odd numbered problems. So again you have no 'blueprint' to use in solving that problem. Those two things are enough to give this book a 1-star rating even with the explanation I gave about non-traditional vs. traditional students.
Some of the answers in the back of book are wrong, so don't rely on the book for checking your homework answers. Interact math is much better and seems the author only explains things in a manner one person would understand.
This book is OK. The graphics are great but the concepts are not layed out in the best possible format. Several times I got confused at what the book was saying and had to take it to my teacher. If you have a good teacher though, this is a great book.
I really like the prerequisites sections because it reviews important intermediate algebra that you'll use in pre-calc. It's nice to flip to each section to get a quick reminder of the rules. I'm at the end of chapter 3 now and so far I really like this book but the advanced language could be a little difficult at times so there are some things that just go in one ear and out the other. In addition to this book I also have the solutions manual and the dvd from the publishers website. I really like the dvd since the things I sort of understand after reading the book is clarified after watching the section on the dvd. I wish every math book had a dvd to compliment the material. As for the solutions manual, sometimes it skips algebra assuming you already know how it's solved which is fine but sometimes it's a tricky problem so it would be useful to see the mid-steps as well. All in all it's a great book. I'd recommend buying the book early to review the prerequisite sections before your school semester starts.
If you need the code for mymathlab.com dont buy this. I biught my book brand new and it didnt cime with the code. Wasted too much money. Just rent the book.
Not built for people who want to actually learn math, this book is aimed at those who don't understand how math can be used in the everyday. If you have any interest in numbers at all, you're screwed because this book is primarily word problems. Bad for dyslexics, non-linear thinkers, and mathematicians. Which is saying something, for a math book.
Few college math books are worth keeping, in my opinion, this one is. The book is well laid out. I haven't found any serious typos or errors. As a cyclist, I particularly like this book for the multiple example problems regarding bicycle gearing and wheel size; it's amusing to note that Sheldon Brown's internet reputation has even found its way into a math textbook.
This book gives EVERY detailed step in showing how to do sample problems. No step is skipped no matter how minor or how sure the author thinks 'Everyone should already know that.' It's the only math text book that I have seen that does that. I was able to learn quickly without agonizing over missing steps. Mr. Dugopolski, write one for calculus, please?!!
The book was a little rough but the rental price ..

The book was a little rough but the rental price compensated. Also the book arrived in the loose leaf version. That is a big plus because you don't need to haul the whole book to classes.
The book cost to much not have given a code to my mathlab.com
This program was so easy to use! (rented) and the book helped out alot. My course did everything online. but it was nice to have a book to look at too. and have extra practice!
Had a lot of writing in it. But came on time. Thank you!
A good book for learning algebra. I like the examples in the book. So clear and helpful.
